Throwing out the trash—and also designing—grants us a temporary façade of order. The principle of entropy tells us, however, that disorder is the natural state of things. Though we may have the feeling of cleanliness in throwing things away, there is in fact no “away.” The creation of order in one space—in a design studio, in a home, in a city—only displaces the disorder to somewhere else. Let us shift then from prioritizing form above all, and rethink what beauty means in design.
Here is a list of works made with techniques for designing with trash, thinking sustainably, and introducing an element of chance. Try these yourself, or think of your own. Something unexpected and beautiful may result in the process.
